Hungary Shuts Door on Ukraine EU Membership Bid

(MENAFN) Hungary will refuse to greenlight European Union accession negotiations with Ukraine throughout the current administration's tenure, Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto announced Monday.

Addressing parliamentary inquiries, Szijjarto declared the window for Ukraine's EU membership bid to represent peace has closed, confirming Budapest's veto persists due to anxieties surrounding European security, economic stability, and employment markets.

"As long as I serve as foreign minister and Viktor Orban is prime minister, Ukraine's accession chapters will not begin," he stated, acknowledging Budapest confronts mounting pressure from Brussels.

He condemned the EU's "war-oriented strategy," citing proposals for substantial financial assistance to Kiev's military and governmental operations. Hungary, he emphasized, will oppose any initiative channeling Hungarian taxpayer funds toward the conflict.

Separately, Agriculture Minister Istvan Nagy told officials in Luxembourg that Hungary will uphold its domestic prohibition on Ukrainian agricultural products, alleging Brussels favors Ukrainian priorities above EU farming communities.

Nagy cautioned that current EU-Ukraine commercial arrangements, featuring elevated import quotas and zero-tariff policies on commodities including honey, poultry, and grain, endanger Europe's agricultural industry.

Hungary, Slovakia, and Romania have jointly submitted correspondence to the EU Council demanding safeguards for farmers in frontier areas.
