Drone Hits Apartment Block in Romania Near Ukraine Border
Authorities said the aircraft impacted the 10th floor of an apartment block in the Galati area, causing an explosion and fire. Around 70 residents were evacuated from the building as firefighters and police secured the scene, with bomb disposal specialists also deployed.
Emergency officials reported that two people were hospitalized with minor injuries, while two others received treatment for panic-related symptoms. Regional spokesperson Catalin Sion confirmed the casualty figures and described the response operation at the site.
Video circulating on social media appears to show the moment of impact, though it has not been independently verified.
Romania’s Defense Ministry later stated that the drone was believed to have originated from Russia and had been involved in operations related to strikes in Ukraine. Russian authorities have not issued a response to the incident.
Romania has previously accused Russia of violating its airspace with drones during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, while Moscow has consistently rejected such claims, arguing that there is no conclusive evidence linking the drones to Russia.
Similar incidents have also been reported in other NATO states bordering the region, with occasional cases of unidentified or suspected Ukrainian drones entering neighboring airspace and causing limited damage. These incidents have contributed to heightened tensions across Eastern Europe as the conflict continues.
